Thanks for the offer--I'm in Lafayette. I'm still not sure what to do as I haven't decided on the exact dust collector yet. I'd rather put the $$$ in the collector since I won't be in this house very long. At least money in the dust collector will come with me. I guess the first thing I need to check is which collectors can run on 110 vs. 220. I guess it's time to start researching some more.

If you only had 110 available, then it would be the right time.

A three horse motor is so big, that it requires big wire to run it. Using 220, double the voltage, allows use of half the size wire required by 110.

Imagine living in Guatemala where they only had 110 available, they would of necessity run that machine on existing availability.

Also, imagine if this were a commercial 3 phase machine, why not use it, it's more efficient, you could get a three phase motor for this. Because you don't have three phase service. You use what you have, and... what's practical.

Well, thanks to all the advice here I now have my 220 service in the basement. I called an electrician and what we ended up with was the 220v, with a double pole 20 amp breaker, and #12/3 wire. The reason for the 12/3 wire was because I'm blind! The wire from the original pics above is 12/3--I thought it was 14/2 so when he got here, it was much cheaper to keep the existing wire as opposed to trying to rewire everything through the attic, etc.

The 12/3 wire helped me decide which dust collector to buy. Now I'll have to go with the Oneida 3hp collector which runs on 220, 14 amps. That should be fine considering I never run more than 1 machine at a time. That machine is rated over 1800 true CFM which should be good enough, right?

I liked your idea about the subpanel, however that was a little cost prohibitive at $700 considering I'll only be here less than 3 more years. That seriously would have cut in to the amount I could spend on the dust collector.

Finally, one huge added bonus--The electrician found a huge wired HDTV antenna in my attic when he went up there. I have DirectTV and was getting ready to shell out a couple hundred bucks to get an off-air antenna installed for the local channels. I had no idea it was up there when we bought the house. The money he saved me on an antenna paid for the 220 service. What a great day. Now I'm very close to being able to start building again--YEAH!!!!!

I agree the sub panel would be a bit expensive for a location you know you have to leave in 3 years.
