[QUOTE=John Elshaw] Okay, I'm getting down to my last couple questions. Since the motor is 115/230v, 28/14 amps, under what conditions would it be ideal to run the collector on 115 instead of 230? Since the motor can run on either 115 or 230, there must be some combination that is okay for 115 right, or am I still missing something?
Thanks!

If you only had 110 available, then it would be the right time.
A three horse motor is so big, that it requires big wire to run it. Using 220, double the voltage, allows use of half the size wire required by 110.
Imagine living in Guatemala where they only had 110 available, they would of necessity run that machine on existing availability.
Also, imagine if this were a commercial 3 phase machine, why not use it, it's more efficient, you could get a three phase motor for this. Because you don't have three phase service. You use what you have, and... what's practical.
